DIPLOMA IN PARALEGAL STUDIES

OVERVIEW

Paralegals, also known as legal assistants, play a vital role in supporting legal professionals across various sectors, including law firms, government agencies, corporations, financial institutions, and insurance companies. Their responsibilities include conducting legal research, preparing documents, organizing case files, and assisting with client communication. This program aims to equip students with essential legal knowledge and practical skills, enabling them to provide effective support in legal environments. The course is particularly beneficial for individuals working in the judiciary, law enforcement agencies (Police, Prisons), government institutions, and corporate legal departments. Additionally, the diploma serves as a pathway for those who wish to advance their studies in law.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Diploma in Paralegal Studies is designed to develop competent and ethical paralegal professionals who can effectively assist legal practitioners. The key objectives of the program are:

  • To provide foundational legal knowledge and practical skills required for paralegal work.
  • To prepare students to support legal professionals in various fields, including private practice, corporate law, and government institutions.
  • To develop ethical and professional values essential for legal practice.
  • To enhance research and analytical skills necessary for legal work.
  • To create a pathway for further legal education, including progression to a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).

MODE OF DELIVERY

To accommodate different learning needs and schedules, the Diploma in Paralegal Studies will be offered in multiple modes:

  • Full-time program – Ideal for students who can commit to regular weekday classes.
  • Part-time program – Designed for working professionals who require flexible learning schedules.
  • Weekend program – Suitable for individuals who prefer weekend classes due to work or personal commitments.

Regardless of the mode of study, all students will receive the same quality of education and must meet the same academic requirements. The program runs for 12 months, comprising 9 months of coursework and examinations followed by a 3-month internship for practical exposure.

The academic calendar consists of three terms:

Term 1: January – April

Term 2: May – July

Term 3: August – October
